If you feel a security procedure is ineffective or inappropriate, what should you do?
What avenues exist for communicating issues with security procedures within your organisation?

There may be times when unforeseen events challenge existing security procedures. Alternatively, there may be better ways of doing things which more effectively or efficiently result in the same ends being achieved. In these cases, there will be value for the organisation and personnel in revisiting and potentially revising procedures and processes.

There should be processes and avenues in place to enable staff to raise concerns regarding security procedures within existing management structures. Discussing these issues with the employee’s line manager would be an appropriate place to start. Some workplaces also have anonymous channels for reporting issues (‘whistleblowing’).

Workplaces may even incentivise employees to suggest innovation in procedures – rewarding those who contribute to the efficiency of the organisation within the constraints of ensuring security.
